The Works Ministry and the operator of the Touch 'n Go services have both denied that the 20 percent toll rebate for frequent travellers is being discontinued.

“We have not received any directive from the government on this so far,” an unnamed ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying in theSun today.

The same report also quotes a Touch 'n Go spokesperson saying the rebate is a government programme and they have received no directive to stop it.

They were responding to a report on the Malay daily Sinar Harian on last Dec 31 that the programme will be discontinued beginning Jan 1.

The daily also quoted unnamed sources claiming that June 30 would be the last day for motorists to claim the accumulated rebates.

The rebate is for Touch 'n Go card users who have more than 80 toll transactions per month on participating highways, and gives a 20 percent refund on the total transactions.

Sinar Harian’s report came as motorists brace for an anticipated toll hike, which Works Minister Fadillah Yusof said is inevitable, but no decision has been made yet.
