The party’s FT Youth wing sends a memo to the gov't-linked Tenaga Nasional Bhd, urging that the tariff hike be put off.
The Federal Territories PAS Youth wing today handed over a petition with 10,000 signatures urging electricity supplier Tenaga Nasional Bhd to postpone the move to raise electricity tariffs.
Accompanied by four PAS supporters, PAS Youth chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin turned up at the TNB office in Bangsar to hand over the petition.
The petition was put together in two weeks, using Facebook.
"Our memorandum to TNB urges the government to postpone the electricity tariff hikes and also to review the energy industry structure in the country.
"We are also asking the government to disclose the reserve electricity capacity to avoid unfair payments by TNB to the independent power producers (IPP)," Khairil told Malaysiakini.
TNB's corporate communications manager Omar Sidek received the memorandum on behalf of the government-linked company.
Khairil said a copy of the same memorandum would also be sent to the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water at Putrajaya.
Energy Minister Maximus Ongkili had on Dec 2 announced that electricity tariffs would rise by 15 percent in peninsular Malaysia and 17 percent in Sabah and Sarawak from Jan 1, 2014 (tomorrow).
'Wear orange for Turun protest'
Khairil also urged the people to join the Turun protest at Dataran Merdeka tonight and to wear orange.
Protests against price hikes in the country have been growing.
Besides PAS, the youth wings of PKR and DAP have also pledged support for the anti-price hikes protest, which seems to be growing despite warnings from the police and government that it is a move to topple the government.
Another Youth NGO, Jingga 13, has meanwhile asked all Malaysians to take part in a Freeze Mob on Twitter (hashtag: #FreezeMalaysia) for five minutes from 10.10 tonight to voice their objections to the price hikes.
