As a Malaysian taxpayer, I would like to know why is it that, although my father's generation had the benefit of a world-class university within his midst - in the form of Universiti Malaya - today I am still earning Third-World wages, and yet in 20 years time I will be paying for tuition fees at First-World rates to ensure that my children are given the education that will enable them to participate in the global economy.

I would like to know why, after 10 years of inception and millions of my tax money, I have yet to see the rudiments of the Multimedia Super Corridor reaching to the general population. Basic tenets of the Net economy such as affordable broadband is still not available to the middle-class Malaysian suburban.

I would like to know what were the main reasons for the ever increasing telephone charges. My antiquated home telephone lines provided by Telekom Malaysia, which should have been amortised and capitalised over the decades, continue to deliver to me the level of service provided 20 years ago.

I would like to know what portion of the impressive Telekom skyscraper along the Federal Highway was financed by monopolistic increase of phone and rental charges.

I would like to know what are thoughts of our senior civil servants and our elected members of Parliament o­n Malaysia's economic sustainability with increased competition from China and lower-cost producers of manufactured goods.

What are their comments, and do they realise that the battle for a knowledge-based economy, though spearheaded by the MSC, has today been won by India and Singapore?
