A non-governmental organisation said in George Town today that it has provided the police with the identity of an individual who had been inviting people to a gathering at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur to allegedly overthrow the government.

Persatuan Muka Buku Pulau Pinang said it gave police the name of the individual and identity card number when it lodged a report at the Lebuh Pantai police station in George Town on the proposed gathering.

Its chairperson, Salleh Ismail, said the NGO identified the individual from a Facebook account.

“In our police report, we provided the name of the individual and identity card number to help police in their investigation,” he told reporters after making the report.

Ismail said such a gathering could tarnish the image of the country and frighten away foreign tourists who would want to gather at Dataran Merdeka for the New Year Eve countdown celebration.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted as saying recently that the police viewed seriously the distribution of posters inviting the people to overthrow the government on Dec 31 and would investigate the matter.
