Collective efforts needed for human rights in Iraq
Its deeply regrettable that LCH feels that there are 'Good reasons to get rid of Saddam'. While the world recognises the many atrocities initiated and carried out by Saddam, the world should still observe the rule of law, and the system and order that we have long maintained.
LCH has forgotten that the world is moving forward, away from the brute philosophy of force politics. The world has seen how individuals like Hitler took advantage of the social and economic situation to slaughter many innocent beings. How does this differ from the current US-led attack on Iraq?
No country in the world has maintained a perfect system of governance in the aspect of human rights and democracy. This struggle is faced by countries elsewhere and this is a struggle that must play itself out throught consultative politics and participation of the people.
Whatever the problems of a country, these must be left to its people to resolve. The world is only responsible for providing assistance via multilateral politics, not to conduct an invasion in the name of human rights and democracy.
The role played by the US is unilateral in nature, due to the absence of sanctions by the world community. In other words, it is illegal.
LCH's observation on the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) is absurd. Iraq has every right to protect and defend itself.
The problem here is lack of clarity as to what is meant by WMD. The concept is propagandist in nature, as even intelligent minds like LCH would conclude that the scud missile is a WMD. The US has succeeded in blurring the concept through spin-doctoring.
The world is witnessing a dangerous precedent. Emotional observations and primitive arguments must be subjected to a reality check. No country has rights over another country - whatever the reason may be. We are living in a civilised era and the world does have a multilateral system.
A collective effort, rather than force, is needed to address problems of democracy and human rights in Iraq. We may feel that we have thought through all solutions, but we are just not thinking enough.
