Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar today pledged action against organisers of the protest outside Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) this morning.

This, he said, was because organisers had failed to notify police about the protest as required under the law.

"Legal action will be taken against the organisers for violating the Peaceful Assembly Act 2013," he told a press conference in Cheras today.

NONEThe demonstration this morning, organised by Pakatan Rakyat MPs in Kuala Lumpur was to protest the steep assessment rate hike on residents in the federal territory.

“They should have respected the law which was passed by Parliament and not go against a law that was passed by the House,” added Khalid.

Pakatan Rakyat MPs who led the protesters today had helped submit some 20,000 protest letters against the assessment hike.

They had flooded the DBKL headquarters, while the rest of the protesters waited outside the building.

On a separate matter, Abdul Khalid some 2,004 people have been arrested for not paying their traffic summonses.

“We have not gone to houses to conduct arrests yet, so far (the arrests are from) traffic checks and roadblocks, we are still giving people a chance to settle their summonses,” he said.

He said there were some 1,7 million unsettled summonses, but about 30 to 40 percent of the summonses have been settled after police began arresting offenders with several summonses under Ops Warta.
