In reading the royal address by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the recent Parliamentary session, I have never felt so disgusted as a Malay and a Malaysian.

The o­nly thing I have left is being a Muslim. When I see the politicians bungle over the Anwar Ibrahim saga and create all sorts of ridiculous reasons to persecute the KMM (Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia, named Kumpulan Militan Malaysia by the mainstream media) and putting honest citizens in prison without a decent trial, I know what I must do as a Malaysian.

The institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is an important balance mechanism. Dr Aziz Bari (lecturer at Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah Of Laws, International Islamic University of Malaysia) in many of his writings has clearly indicated the moral responsibility of this institution. I would like to think that this institution is still relevant to Malaysians.

As a Muslim, I remind the King that as the Four Pious Caliphs of old were reminded by ordinary Muslims about their actions, I call o­n this precedence to remind the King that his words must be chosen carefully so that Malaysians do not construe or conclude that the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong resembles closer to mere puppetry.
