Affordable housing finally taking shape in Penang

The Penang government's efforts to provide affordable housing for Penangites are finally taking shape and a display of some of these units has now been put up.
The state government today launched an exhibition in a public space on the ground flood of Komtar on the proposed affordable houses planned for Jalan SP Chelliah.

This move addresses the many criticisms towards the state government for not providing enough affordable homes for poorer Penangites.
State executive councillor Chow Kon Yeow said piling work for the houses would be carried out next year.
Chow said Zubicon Sdn Bhd, the company offered the tender to build the houses, will soon send in its development plan.
During his speech at the event, Chow said state development arm Penang Development Corporation (PDC) inked the deal to build the 1,900 affordable houses along Jalan SP Chelliah, at a gross development value of RM500 million.
Jalan SP Chelliah sits on Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) land and the council will therefore benefit from the sales of the units, with much of the earnings going to the developer.
PDC signed the agreement with Zubicon, which won the deal through an open tender exercise to develop the medium- and low-cost affordable housing.
According to Chow, MPPP appointed PDC as its lawyer and project administrator to administer and manage the development of the land.
"This project is in addition to the 11,800 units of affordable housing that will be built by PDC in Batu Kawan, in stages over a 10-year period," said Chow.
"This is the continuing effort by the state in fulfilling its aspirations to ensure more affordable housing for Penangites," Chow said.
Other projects in Teluk Kumbar, Jelutong
Other notable affordable housing projects being planned on the island are in Teluk Kumbar and Jelutong.
Another effort by the state to provide housing for its people are also in the works. One is the purchase of 50 low-cost houses at about RM25,000 each in Seberang Perai to be rented to eligible families.
"The commitment of the state in ensuring all affordable housing projects progress smoothly as planned is backed by the State's Affordable Home Fund," Chow said.
"This sizeable RM500 million fund, the biggest compared to any other state, was set up last year and it provides the much needed impetus to help fulfil the state's pledge to build more affordable homes for Penangites," he said.
The RM500 million is managed through the Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI), with PDC as the implementing agency.
Chow said the entire development of affordable housing on the land must be fully completed within four years or by November 2017.
