Banks undecided on operating hours in Johor

Banks are still deliberating the impact of the change of rest day in Johor, from Sunday to Friday.
Association of Banks Malaysia (ABM) executive director Chuah Mei Lin said that this was because the banks were still not certain whether the private sector would have the option to maintain the status quo.

"We are in consultation with our member banks with operations in Johor with regard to the announcement made... for some clarity as to whether private companies will have the option of maintaining or changing their rest days.
"There are ramifications that will have to be carefully considered and an announcement will be made in due course," Chuah said in an email to Malaysiakini.
The ABM represents 27 commercial banks including Affin Bank, Alliance Bank, Ambank, Maybank, Hong Leong Bank, Standard Chartered, Public Bank, RHB Bank, OCBC Bank, HSBC Bank and CIMB. 17 of these banks operate in Johor.
Chinese chambers of commerce welcome change
Yesterday, the Johor Association of Chinese Chambers of Commerce welcomed the rest day change as long as banks and private business can maintain the Monday to Friday work week.
Johor Menteri Besar Khaled Nordin is reported to have said that the private sector can choose its rest days, but made no mention of banks.
Major banks in Kelantan and Terengganu operate from Sunday to Thursday but close earlier on Thursday. The banks close on Friday and Saturday.
Johor's Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar last Saturday decreed that Johor's rest day will from next year be Friday, instead of Sunday.
Johor had observed a Sunday to Thursday work week until 1994 when the rest day was changed to Sunday.
