The recent flurry of letters to malaysiakini written by non-Muslims about polygyny in Islam and its negative impact on Muslim women, children and society, has within it the potential for destructiveness and mischief, even though many of their arguments — from the point of view of secular discourse — are well taken.

However, the discourse is religious and affects those of another religion not shared by the writers. I exclude those letters written by Muslim women.

The concerns of these non-Muslims — in my view — are misplaced in the dynamics of what is happening in Malaysia in the current climate of active national Islamisation.

Non-Muslims should not fear what happens to Muslims if one version or another of Islam is imposed upon them. It is their religion and in most cases Malaysian Muslims choose to be Muslims or remain so. Again I exclude from this those Malaysian Muslims who no longer wish to be Muslims, but are afraid to do anything about it for fear of legal and extra-legal punishment and retaliation.

What non-Muslims in Malaysia should fear and fight against is the imposition of Islam, the religion, and its laws on non-Muslims, which is at the very core of the concept of the Islamic state.

Otherwise, they should let Muslims deal with their religious debates and strengths and weakness as they like.
