I am a moderate Malaysian Muslim and believe we can live peacefully and progressively in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society.

Polygyny is not a new issue, it has been practised even before the time of Prophet Muhammad. From the religious books, we know that the prophets have been marrying more than one wife. Through history, kings and emperors to even ordinary and poor people have been marrying more than one wife. So why the fuss about polygamy?

In Islam, polygyny is allowed and it is halal. It is clearly stated in al Quran,

"And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (the captives and the slaves) that your right hands possess. That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice." An Nisa' Verse 3

I am not forcing the non-Muslims to believe in the Quran, because it is not right to do so. I only seek their understanding and appreciation of other school of thoughts. If we are discussing and debating about the procedure in courts and weaknesses in current regulation on how to implement it, then I can understand.

Attacking polygyny and challenging its usefulness and validity is insulting to the teachings of Islam. I am afraid we have nothing to gain from this.

How many percent of Muslims marry more than one wife? Fifty percent? I bet it is less than one percent, so why the fuss?
