Johor tables deficit budget for 2014

The Johor government today tabled a deficit budget of RM2.02 million for 2014 with estimated revenue of RM1,064.59 million against RM1,062.57 million in expenditure.

Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the budget outlined four main strategies, namely designing a sustainable economy, improving the people’s well-being, empowering the government and producing outstanding human capital.
“The government is confident that development and distribution of the state’s wealth can be carried out fairly and equally if it is based on consultation,” he said when tabling the state budget 2014 in the state assembly at Kota Iskandar in Nusajaya.
He said the government’s revenue was estimated at RM1,064.59 million, from this year’s estimate of RM908.66 million, and the estimated expenditure for next year included RM403.44 million for emolument and RM261.87 for service and supply.
Mohamed Khaled, who is tabling the budget for the first time since being appointed menteri besar, said an allocation of RM16.06 million was set aside for purchase of assets and RM20.44 million for other expenditures.
He said RM296.80 million would be allocated for development next year.
“The state’s economic growth is now strong. Fort his year, as of August, Johor receives the highest investment in the country, at RM8.8 billion.
“This is an increase of RM3.3 billion or about 40 percent from last year,” he added.
He said more than 12,000 new opportunities would be created from these investments.
Foreign investments, he said, continued to be the main contributor to the state’s revenue, totalling RM6.6 billion or 75 percent, with the United States of America as the biggest investor, involving RM2.7 billion or 31 percent of the total foreign investments.
He said based on the positive development, the state’s economic growth for this year was projected at 6.1 percent, hence reflecting the strong economic foundation, despite uncertainties in the world economy.
He attributed the encouraging achievements obtained through domestic and foreign investments to the role played by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda).
