UIAM Pro-Mahasiswa group alleges intervention

The Pro-Mahasiswa group of Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) have voiced their protest against the alleged intervention of the student affairs department in the student representative council (SRC) meeting.

Last Monday’s incident, said UIAM Pro-Mahasiswa president Muhd Najib Abdul Rahim, went against the 49th (5) clause of the UIAM constitution, which states that full power is given to the SRC members to elect its office-bearers in the council.
The SRC meeting was held to determine the office-bearers in the council.
“But what happened now clearly shows intervention from the student affairs department when the office-bearers election process was being controlled by them in determining the president and vice-president posts,” said Muhd Najib in a statement.
“We demand for the meeting to be re-held transparently and no intervention from the administration body,” he added.
The UIAM Pro-Mahasiswa group will send a memorandum to human rights commission Suhakam today calling for an immediate investigation into the matter.
Why no observers from former SRC members?
Muhd Najib had stated several acts that constituted intervention of the student affairs department in the SRC meeting.
“The student affairs department had changed the ‘secret ballot’ method to ‘hands-up’ method to vote for vice-president 1 and 2. Why did they change the voting method?
“The boxes used to collect votes that determine the president of the council was not allowed to be checked by the present SRC members.
“Worse still, the voting papers were counted behind the present SRC members,” he added.
Muhd Najib also questioned why the observers of the SRC meeting were chosen among the students affairs department and rectors office staff, and not from the former SRC members.
“Why are there no observers from the former SRC who were observers of the recent campus polls?” he asked.
UIAM Pro-Mahasiswa group had won 22 out of 25 seats in their campus polls on Oct 30.
However, they had failed to defend three their seats in the Education Faculty, Economics faculty in the Gombak campus and a seat in the Kuantan campus.
