Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir said MCA will not be allocated more than one seat on the state cabinet.

Mukhriz said a precedent was already set where MCA and Gerakan would be allocated one seat each.

"There is only one vacancy for MCA. We have kept a seat for them and now we will fill it up," he said, according to Mingguan Malaysia.

He was responding to MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek's statement on Friday, that the party was eyeing two vacancies on the state cabinet.

Traditionally, Gerakan and MCA are allocated a seat each, but Gerakan has no state assemblypersons in Kedah while MCA has two - Dr Leong Yong Kong (Gurun) and Chua Thiong Gee (Kulim).

Leong is scheduled to swear in as a state cabinet member on Nov 18.

His appointment as an state cabinet member follows the overturning of a rule that bars MCA members from holding any type of government positions.

After Chua took helm of MCA in 2010, he had promoted the idea of rejecting government positions should the party fail to yield better results during the 13th general election.

This was turned into a rule through the party's annual general assembly and reaffirmed at later meetings, despite complaints that the party was explicitly threatening the Chinese community to back them.

Threats or not, MCA did in fact perform worse during the 13th general elections, resulting in most MCA members declining positions from cabinet to village committees.

However, there were certain exceptions. Chua maintained his position as Penang Port Commission chairperson while MCA vice-president Dr Ng Yen Yen was allowed to lead the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB).

The party had a change of heart last month and voted to allow party members to hold any government positions except those in the federal cabinet.
