Group: Penang failed to provide land for Tamil school

Penang Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia has expressed utter disappointment that the state government has failed to provide land for a local Tamil school on the mainland.

Its state chairperson K Kalay Selvam said while the state could not provide land for a poor Tamil school in Batu Kawan, it did for the University of Hull, situated in the same constituency last week.
“We have been requesting for three acres of land for SJKT Ladang Batu Kawan, in view of the large numbers of Tamil school students in the vicinity, whose parents belong to the displaced estate workers group,” Kalay Selvam said in a statement.
Kalay Selvam then cited DAP’s Gelang Patah declaration titled ‘A vision and strategy for Indians empowerment’.
Gelang Patah is a constituency in Johor won by DAP senior leader Lim Kit Siang in the May 5 general election.
In its declaration, DAP states that it offers justice, peace and equality for all, and puts the aspirations of the people at the centre of its social and economic policy.
The party also stated that it recognises that BN’s 56 years of rule has created unequal distribution of wealth, resulting in poverty among Indians.
“But we shall ensure fair and effective distribution of our national wealth,” the declaration added.
Kalay Selvam said the Gelang Patah declaration is DAP’s promise to the Indian community in Malaysia to ensure that all national-type Tamil schools become fully-funded and the infrastructure of every single school is up to par with national schools.
“My question to Guan Eng is this, where is the promise of equality for all when he can sell land to his developer friends for the setting-up of the University of Hull campus but has refused to even give a quotation to us for the purchase of three acres of land?
“Where is DAP’s promise of placing the aspirations of the people at the centre of their policy, when they do not even hear our repeated and loud requests for land for the Tamil school?
“How is this DAP policy going to ensure fair and effective distribution of our national wealth, if they continue to skew decisions against the poor?” queried Kalay Selvam.
The local Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia leader asked what does DAP mean that it would ensure that national-type Tamil schools have infrastructure on par with national schools if it “flatly ignores our request for land for the Batu Kawan Tamil school”.
He condemned the DAP Gelang Patah declaration as being nothing more than a “pack of lies”, if the state does not consider giving or selling land for the school.
