David Shayler, an MI5 operative, was jailed for six months yesterday for breaching the UK Official Secrets Act. The case against Shayler was that he sold secret service information to a UK press and the information could have put at least 50 agents at risk. The court said that Shayler would be set free after serving half of his sentence as Shayler was in jail for about three and a half months while waiting extradition from France to the UK.

In the case of Keadilan Youth chief Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor, he was found guilty of breaching our OSA. However, it was not documents about our secret service or security of our nation. It was documents related to the investigation and prosecution of corruption of two Umno politicians, one of them still a minister.

Corruption, unlike secrets affecting the nation's security which might compromise the lives of secret agents, has to be exposed in the interest of the public. We want our ministers to be free of corruption.

But Mohd Ezam was sent to prison for two years in addition to the two years he was served with by order of Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, under the ISA!
