Violent crime, including murder cases, has dropped by 33 percent in the 52 days since ‘Ops Cantas Khas’ was launched, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the figure constituted a drop from 104 criminal cases to 69.

On the number of arrests and seizure of firearms during the period, he said 15,877 people were picked up from the total 418,922 screened, with the seizure of 469 firearms and dangerous weapons.

A total of 678 vehicles which were linked to crimes were also seized by the authorities.

Wan Junaidi said a total of 352 investigation papers were opened under the Societies Act 1966; 62 under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959; and, 144 investigation papers under the firearm or scheduled weapons offences.

“Of the total (number of cases), 120 cases were brought to court on offences related to firearms and scheduled weapons,” he said when replying to a question from Senator Zaitun Mat Amin in Kuala Lumpur.

Wan Junaidi said the police would continue the operation (Ops Cantas Khas) which was launched on Aug 17, to ensure national security, and until the people felt safe.

“The ministry had also suggested in Parliament recently, that the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 be amended to strengthen enforcement against secret societies, gangsterism and premeditated crimes,” he added.
