Zairil reforms disputed Kedah DAP interim committee

It's a series of déjà vu for DAP following its party re-election last week as the new central executive committee (CEC) revisited some old issues in a bid to squash questions of legitimacy over decisions made under the previous CEC.

This was the case in Kedah where Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari, after being appointed as Kedah DAP interim chief again, reformed the state's DAP interim committee.
In a statement today, Zairil said the party's constitution allowed the CEC to dissolve any state committee and replace them with an interim one for a period of six months.
"Therefore, the party's constitutional provisions are clear and my position as Kedah DAP interim committee chairperson is valid and cannot be disputed," he said.
The interim committee was initially formed shortly after the May 5 general election but its formation was disputed by the old committee led by former Kedah DAP chairperson Lee Guan Aik.
This was because the CEC then was facing legitimacy issues after the party admitted to a tabulation error at its party election in December last year.
‘Inject new blood'
The Registrar of Societies later demanded that DAP hold a re-election, which the party eventually complied for fear of being de-registered.
Lee had claimed that the DAP central leadership had attempted a coup on him and his men, while Zairil had insisted that the move was merely to "inject new blood" to Kedah DAP.
In the statement today, Zairil urged DAP members in the state to close rank ahead of the Sungai Limau by-election on Nov 4.
"With a leadership that is experienced and dynamic, I have sure this team will strengthen the Kedah DAP machinery, especially on the process of expanding the party in the state," he said.
