In the wake of a deluge of criticism over the controversial amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) that resurrects Internal Security Act (ISA) styled detention without trial, a small group of opponents have taken to the streets.

About 10 activists from Suaram and student groups distributed 500 flyers about the amendments at 2.15pm outside the National Mosque today, just after Friday prayers.

NONE'We oppose detention without trial. Say 'no' to draconian laws like ISA, EO, Sosma and PCA' read the flyer.

Some held up a banner reading, 'The people reject detention without trial'.

Several police officers were spotted monitoring the situation and videorecording the scene.

Suaram coordinator Syukri Razab said their campaign is aimed at educating citizens on the right to trial.

The activists plan to carry out such protests over the next three Fridays, and the next venue has yet to be decided, he added.

Tabled in Parliament just 48 hours ago, the amendments make provisions for detention without trial for a period of two years.

This order can be extended by another two years by the board.

Critics have slammed the proposed laws as unconstitutional and a return to the loathsome ISA just abolished in 2012.

Notably, even component parties of the ruling BN coalition, Gerakan and MCA are opposed to the amendments.
