I am not involved in the PAS-Umno spat in the UK, but I must say that I find the Malaysian Student Department director Dr Kamarudin Mohd Nor's recent letter confusing.

Firstly, Kamaruddin said that he is concerned that "unnecessary fear and anxiety" are created among students. This is an irony. Was it not he who created the fear in the first place?

He then claimed that he does not practise discrimination against students subscribing to opposition parties. This is a blatant attempt to deceive the public. Is it not discrimination that he openly threatens a group of students while at the same time explicitly cooperates with another?

Any sponsored student who participates in politically motivated activities is acting against his or her contract. Why threaten only those inclined towards the 'opposition' but turn a blind eye to those in Kelab Umno? Why is it that his whole letter only threatens those in Keadilan and Hizbi, but not those in Kelab Umno? Is this not discrimination?

What is wrong with PAS leaders going to the UK when Kelab Umno openly organises events with Umno leaders who have no positions in the government, or whose governmental position has no connection to students? Kamarudin discriminates with his political bias but refuses to accept it.

From this whole saga, I feel that Kamarudin has brought disgrace to the whole institution of MSD in London. He clearly discriminates against certain groups of students, but is unable to take responsibility for his actions.

If he wants only non-political organisations to be registered with the MSD, then he himself must consider resigning from the post as he is disgracefully bringing political agenda to the whole machinery of the MSD.

And, I also fail to understand why any society needs to register with the MSD. I have been a student leader at my university's (in Glasgow, Scotland) Malaysian Student Association for two years. We cannot find even a single reason to register with the MSD.

Why should anyone else register, especially after the director himself openly professes his political inclination? I find registration irrelevant and cumbersome. But perhaps the MSD has a hidden agenda for the political benefits of certain quarters when insisting that societies registered with them.

As for Kamarudin's remarks on non-Malay Malaysian students, I find it offensive and inconsiderate. How can he say that we "choose to keep quiet and just concentrate on their studies financed by their parents mostly" when the MSD has never made any attempt to cater for our welfare?

My colleagues and I have never chosen to keep quiet. We love Malaysia and we want to see a changed Malaysia, hopefully by the time we finish our studies and go home. We have been actively engaged in intellectual discussions, sometimes with political figures, on the ways to bring reform to Malaysia.

And going back to the point about registration, one of the reasons we do not register is because we fear that MSD will stop our intellectual efforts and force their own (or BN's) agenda upon us. I, for one, have consistently attended programmes organised by everyone, including the 'opposition', so that I can hear from all sides.

My message to Kamarudin is, please do not say things that would only show how the MSD has not cared, and has no knowledge about the non-Malay Malaysians in the UK. And please do not drag us into your quarrel with others.

Furthermore, we want an MSD that is friendly to all students, regardless of their political inclination. We want a more democratic Malaysia. And many of us are working towards just that, even without the MSD's interference.
