I think malaysiakini has reported very well on the ISA 6 debacle and de facto Law Minister Rais Yatim's proposal to classify the 60-day police investigation as official secrets under the Official Secrets Act.

In this, I wish to say that the Federal Court's folly in allowing the two-year detention order to stand must not go on or be remembered without criticism. It is clear that our judiciary is not out of the woods yet. The judiciary should have just gone for the full Monty, as the saying goes, and made a commitment to uphold democratic principles to strike down the two-year detention order when it ruled the initial arrest of the ISA 6 as illegal.

The executive, as everybody ought to know by now, is anarchical in that it has no respect for the rule of law. Instead of respecting the decision that the initial arrest is illegal, Rais now wants to shut the judiciary up with the proposed amendments to the law. The executive is in fact ruling the judiciary.

The regime in power (read: Umno), in this year alone has been very active in curtailing more and more of our civil and political rights, first with election laws and now the ISA amendment. If we as Malaysians continue to give support to the regime, I guess we deserve this government.
