Jeffrey's letter Dangers lurk in MyKad has my vote on the matter.

This is not the first time the government is engaging in an expensive and complex nationwide identity cards upgrade involving 22 million Malaysians.

Is it admitting the first exercise to upgrade to the NRIC was a wrong move, especially after the date-of-birth omission? How much will the latest IC upgrade exercise cost the taxpayers in addition to the old one?

The government's intention to store a wealth of information on one card puts our information security at risk. What guarantees do we have that the centralised databank will be safe from meddling hands outside and, more importantly, inside the government? Why was the issue of safety not addressed, especially when banks are still struggling to get over credit card frauds and shared auto-teller machines security problem?

It used to be that you only had to worry about your credit and ATM cards when your wallet gets stolen. Now thieves or anyone with a card-reading machine will also have the full history of your life in their hands. It's an even scarier thought that with the centralisation of information, sinister figures can 'create' or 'delete' persons at the touch of a button.

With all the questions yet unanswered, I fear that the government is diving headlong into another potential digital mess in the name of "Malaysia Boleh" and "Cinta IT".
