Police detained four men for being involved in organising an illegal assembly near a supermarket at Kota Baru, yesterday to protest the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

Kelantan Chief Police Officer Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the four men, aged between 22 and 36, were detained at the venue of the assembly at about 3.20pm.

"The case is being investigated under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. All the four detainees will be released on police bail after their statement have been recorded," he said in a statement today.

Jalaluddin said police also seized pamphlets relating to the assembly.

He said there were about 20 people at the gathering at that time but the four refused to disperse and continued with the gathering before police detained them.

Meanwhile, two men died while another sustained serious injuries after the car they were travelling in skidded in an accident at Jalan Salor Baharu-Pasir Mas at 2am today.

The dead were identified as the driver of the Honda Civic car, Mohd Asrul Afian Samsudin, 24, and rear passenger Muhammad Atras Ramli, 29.

Muhammad Atras died on the spot while Mohd Asrul Afian died at the Pasir Mas Hospital. Meanwhile, Azizul Abdullah, 29, who sustained serious injury, was being treated at the Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II, here.

Two of their friends, aged 29 and 21, however, escaped with light injury.
