Retired navy chief Abu Bakar Jamal claimed and asserted, without any proof and evidence, that some "reformasi supporters" asked the military to stage a coup d'etat in 1999.

If the allegation is true, it is certainly very serious, but if it is not, Abu Bakar Jamal could and should be charged for spreading false and alarming news, or being an accessory before criminal facts.

If the allegation is true, he should lodge a police report against specific persons, and with details of time and places. It is his duty as a citizen as well as a responsible member of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). Failing to do so, I call on the government to charge him either for spreading false news, or being an accessory before the fact (of a criminal act).

Abu Bakar Jamal should also reveal to the public what income-earning positions in the public or private sector he is currently holding. He should also publicly declare his income and wealth to establish his political credibility.

Failing which, someone else in the know should make his background transparent to the world.
