I agree with Wan Sou Hai in the letter OSA is 'Officials' Secret Act?' that de facto Law Minister Dr Rais Yatim should be criticised for approving the prosecution or persecution of Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor under the draconian Official Secret Act (OSA) which allows whistle-blowers to be punished while corrupt public officials go scot-free.

Rais' discrepancy between his "reformist" image and posture on one hand, and real intentions and behaviour on the other is now clear for the world to see. In fact, from the moment he disowned his doctoral thesis on the relationship between executive and judicial powers, I have already discerned that he is planted as a "sleeper" or a "mole" by the authoritarian regime into the camp of democrats and progressive.

Normally, "sleepers" and "moles" like this would pretend to be very "enlightened", "reasonable" and "democratic", but when the critical moments come, they would strike at the democratic forces that pose a real threat to the regime. Jailing a young, popular, educated and moderate Muslim leader like Ezam is certainly one such critical moment.

Why should we think Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is so "tolerant" as to allow Rais to appear to be critical of some of his policies and measures while retaining the position of de facto law minister? He must have a certain amount of useful values in the preservation of the corrupt regime.

Indeed, there are many other such "sleepers" and "moles" in the Bar Council, trade unions, non-governmental organisations and the mainstream media. While appearing to be democratic, progressive and moderate among other traits, these people would support the Internal Security Act, Official Secret Act, Universities and University Colleges Act and other repressive measures at critical moments.

Their objective is simple: while encouraging non-threatening and weak opposition parties and oppositionists to window-dress the authoritarian regime, they help the authoritarian regime to eliminate genuine and powerful opposition parties and personalities such as Keadilan, Anwar Ibrahim, Ezam, Tian Chua and others.

They also manufacture and propagate false hopes of reform, and serve to strategically deceive and mislead international opinions.

Malaysians have the right to know and understand these dark statecraft of the establishment and ruling elites. Otherwise, Malaysians will forever be living in an environment ruled by corrupt police, judges, ministers and journalists.
