It is immature and  pointless for BN to moot the idea  of a  unity government with Pakatan Rakyat, said Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz.

“If every time there is an election, and there is a result that cuts in between, then every time we have to have a unity government... then what’s the point of having an election?” he told reporters in Shah Alam today.

He urged politicians to get out of this mindset that results from the 13th general election showed that there was a split.

Although BN won 133 out of 222 seats in Parliament, BN failed to regain the two-thirds majority that it had lost in 2008. However, under Malaysia’s first-past-the-post system, that is enough to form the government.

“You must accept it... unless you can’t form the government,” Nazri said.

He said the unity government idea was  a “knee jerk reaction” which only shows that Malaysia was not a mature democracy yet.

In response to a question, Nazri said that current BN government was already ideal.

“Can you tell me a better (government) position whereby you can have check and balance... tell me?” he said.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has previously refused to accept the general election results which saw BN losing the popular vote but retaining power. On Monday, he confirmed that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has been making overtures about the possibility of forming a unity government with the opposition.
