First it was falling objects (ramp on the Second Penang Bridge and Menara Umno lightning rod), then a spate of three shootings in a day on the first day of Aidilfitri, and a fire yesterday which gutted houses affecting some 80 families in Bayan Baru.

This afternoon, at about 2.30pm, a huge home-made firecracker was thrown at the back of a car belonging to a worker at one of the offices along Love Lane, which left one injured.

Georgetown OCPD ACP Gan Kong Meng said that a report has been lodged by the owner of the car and the case is being probed under Section 506 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Gan said the incident occurred when the victim, Ong Kok Kwang, 23, a bank officer, drove his Honda Civic along Jalan Farquhar with his friends at about 2.30pm.

“Suddenly a black Nissan Grand Lavina with two males tailed Ong’s car from behind," he said.

“The victim turned into Love Lane to return to his workplace and the Nissan was still tailing him,” he added.

“The victim tried to let the car overtake but was hit several times from behind. He refused to stop as he was afraid,” Gan said in an sms to reporters.

Gan said then, the driver of the Nissan wound down his window and hurled what appeared to look like a home-made firecracker at the back of the victim’s car.

This damaged the bumper of the victim’s car as it was hit by the Nissan and the explosion from the firecracker.

Gan said the Nissan then followed the victim’s car to Jalan Burmah, after which, encountering a police patrol on their rounds, the Nissan and its occupants fled.

Gan said following the incident, another report was lodged by Chinese national Sok Cheng Chenag, 21, a tourist, who claimed the firecrackers hit her.

“However, she could not identify who did this as she only heard an explosion and then felt herself hit by the firecracker,” said Gan.

“She sustained slight injuries on the sole of her left foot,” Gan said.

Gan said he is unable to ascertain yet the amount and cost of the damages to the vehicle.
