Anwar and Karpal asked to declare assets

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP national chairperson Karpal Singh have both been asked to declare their assets in order to prove allegations of judicial bribery against them as not true.

Kedah Kita chief Zamil Ibrahim and Penang-based lawyer Ranjit Singh Dhillon were both quoted by Utusan Malaysia today as urging the two senior opposition figures to declare their assets.
This exercise, Zamil and Ranjit said, would prove the innocence of the two leaders in a bribery allegation raised against them by the BN candidate for Permatang Pauh, Mazlan Ismail.
Mazlan claims he has received some 6,000 letters detailing how Anwar had, since 2008, paid Karpal some RM50 million in order to be acquitted in the Sodomy II case, when Karpal was Anwar's counsel.
"Anwar and Karpal must be brave in declaring their assets and all bank accounts, be it locally or internationally, to prove to the people that they are not corrupt," Utusan quotes Zamil as saying.
Zamil also said that if the two did not do so, it would prove them to be "hypocrites".
The Umno-owned daily also quoted Ranjit as making a similar call, citing the example of asset declaration already practised by the opposition-led Penang state government.
Both Karpal and Anwar have denied the allegations and have threatened to take legal action against Mazlan to making the allegations.
