Religion relevant in some societies
Modernity seems to have more to offer me. I live a happy life. I have a secure future. However, recently I had the opportunity to spend two weeks living among the poor along the border of Mexico and US finding jobs for those impoverished parents; running a local craft workshop to help women subsidise the family income; teaching them the basic knowledge of sanitation; and most importantly, teaching them the religious value to live with dignity despite their disadvantaged condition.
For these people, religion gave them hope to live for another day. From what I gather, a high percentage of the world population live like these people. Science and modern knowledge will not give them the courage to live for another day.
All I am trying to say is, do not discredit religion outright and glorify science without deeper analyses. Religion and science all have their own role to play in modern society. We can debate all we can on the relevancy of religion in modern society, but ultimately the answer lies in the hands of the masses living under such deprived conditions whether religion is still relevant to them.
They are the ones who can give us an answer.
