The maximum speed for federal, state and town roads in Malacca will be reduced from 80kph to 70kph during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season.

Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron said the speed limit would be implemented starting tomorrow and will remain in force until Aug 18 as part of efforts to reduce accidents in the state which increased during festive seasons.

“The reduction in speed will be meaningless if drivers don’t change their attitude, especially during the festive season. It is okay to be late so long as our family is safe.

“We also do not want any more deaths recorded due to accident during the festive season. We must not only drive carefully but also drive with our heart,” he told a press conference after a state exco meeting in Malacca today.

Meanwhile, he said the Malacca Education Trust Fund would give discounts of between 10 and 20 percent to those who pay back their loans under two schemes.

Through the fund, 4,921 students had received RM14 million in education loans.
