'Give more money for Pan Borneo Highway'

An opposition leader has urged the government to stop its lopsided development practice by allocating more money to the Pan Borneo Highway, a RM22 billion project promised during the last general election.
Development cannot be based in the Klang Valley alone and should be balanced throughout Malaysia, says an opposition MP.

DAP MP Chan Foong Hin (left) said the highway, which stretches 2,239 km from Sematan Serudong, in Sarawak to Sabah was essential to unlock the economic potential of East Malaysia and can be constructed in a shorter time frame if more money was given.
"Development cannot be based in the Klang Valley alone and should be balanced throughout Malaysia, "added the Sabah DAP publicity secretary.
In a press statement, Chan compared the Pan Borneo Highway to the MRT project in Klang Valley.
"Pan Borneo Highway’s RM22 billion is supposedly expensive and have to be built gradually until 2025, while the first MRT line with approximately the same cost RM20 billion could be completed by 2016! All three MRT lines are expected to be completed by 2020," he said.
The government have allocated Sabah and Sarawak RM 9.5 billion and RM12.5 billion each to build the Pan Borneo Highway in stages.
Chan noted that a total of RM457 million has been allocated under the 10th Malaysia Plan and out of the total amount, Sabah and Sarawak each received only RM50 million last year for this project.
