Whole East Coast Expressway to open in September 2014

The government had to offer a fresh tender to a new contractor to resume the abandoned East Coast Expressway 2 (ECE2) project as the original contractor withdrew owing to an increase in the prices of construction materials, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Works Minister Fadillah Yusof (right) said the government wanted to ensure that the 184km-long ECE2 was completed on schedule, by the targeted August 2014 date.
“Based on the current contract, the final Package 7 of the ECE2 was a stretch of 13.5 kilometres from Bukit Mempusi to Kerteh 6, Kemaman,” he said.
Senator To’ Puan Zaitun Mat Amin had asked Fadillah to state the reason for the delay in the ECE2 project.
Fadillah said that up to June 30 this year, the ECE2 project was 88.5 percent complete.
He said the government had implemented the ECE2 in stages, beginning with the 72km stretch from the Bukit Besi elevated exchange to the Kuala Terengganu elevated exchange.
The whole route was expected to be opened to traffic in September next year, he said.
