Lembah Pantai Umno division leader Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has filed a lawsuit against Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and two others for allegedly defaming him over the purchase of land in Bukit Kiara.

NONEThe former federal territories and urban well-being minister filed the suit at the Civil High Court registry July 17 through Messrs. Raja Riza & Associates.

Besides Nurul Izzah, who is also PKR vice-president, Raja Nong Chik (right) also named Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd, the owner of the Malaysiakini news portal, and Malaysiakini journalist Lu Wei Hoong, as defendants.

The writ of the summons was made available to the media today.

Lawyer M Reza Hassan, who is representing Raja Nong Chik, said the case had been fixed for case management on Aug 19 before High Court judge Yeoh Wee Siam.

Reputation tarnished

In the statement of claim, Raja Nong Chik, 60, stated that Nurul Izzah, 33, had issued the alleged false and defamatory statement on the land purchase at a media conference at Bangunan Bakti, Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur a day before polling for the 13th general election.

He claimed that the statement by Nurul Izzah was posted on the Malaysiakini website the same day, which was May 4 this year.

Raja Nong Chik is seeking an injunction to stop the defendants, or their agents, from further publishing the alleged defamatory words against him.

He is also seeking general and aggravated damages and an order for the defendants to publish an apology, as well as interests and costs.

Raja Nong Chik said that as a result of the publication of the statement, his reputation and dignity as a politician, former minister and senator had been tarnished.

In the May 5 general election, Nurul Izzah defeated Raja Nong Chik for the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat with a majority of 1,847 votes.
