While I respect PAS for its struggle for human dignity and moral order in a time of moral corruption and decadence, I also think that it should not proceed with tabling or passage of the hudud and qisas in the Trengganu state assembly.

Instead, PAS should continue to conduct its reform and opening up process by fielding more educated female and non-Malay Muslim candidates in the coming general elections, and by projecting more professionals in the public discourse so that there would be no more excuses for Umno and MCA to paint it as "intolerant", "anti-women" and "backward".

Umno fears a moderate, not radical PAS.

PAS' members of parliament must also perform even better by showing concerns for the well-beings of all Malaysians, and by exposing corruption, abuses of power, violation of human rights, financial mismanagement and other misdeeds by the ruling coalition.

PAS' leaders, members and supporters who live and work in the more multiethnic West Coast should also make more non-Muslim friends, and show them by personal examples that they are more humane and loving. A wide network of non-Muslim friends is as important as making speeches in ceramah (public gathering).

They must understand that many non-Muslims only know about PAS through the mass media controlled by Umno and Barisan Nasional. They do not have close personal friendship with PAS leaders, members and supporters. Personal communication can help to destroy the propaganda of Umno and BN. Besides, personal friendship can also help to obtain feedback directly for the benefit of the party.

PAS should also produce more publicity materials on common and national issues in Mandarin, Tamil and English so that more Malaysians can understand its positions faster and more effectively.
