The Butterworth Sessions Court fixed Sept 9 for the trial of Penang Pakatan Rakyat executive secretary Ong Eu Leong who was charged with organising a peaceful rally on May 11 without a police permit.

Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi fixed the date when the case was rementioned today.

Deputy public prosecutors Suhaimi Ibrahim and Nur Ashikin Mokhtar appeared for the prosecution while Ong was represented by counsels Lim Boon Beng and Ong Chin Wen.

Suhaimi also said that about five witnesses were expected to be called for the trial in September.

Ong, 44, was charged on May 27 with organising the rally on May 11 at the State Stadium in Batu Kawan, near Butterworth, without a police permit.

The charge under Section 9 (1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 is punishable with a fine of up to RM10,000 under Section 9 (5) of the same Act.
