Despite some 30,000 people having attended the latest leg of the ‘Black 505' rally series last weekend at Padang Merbok, top officials of the Election Commission (EC) were still adamant on clinging to their posts.

EC deputy chief Wan Ahmad Wan Omar told Utusan Malaysia that he and another five election commissioners will not be giving in to the demands of the protesters.

He said the demand for them to step down is irresponsible and goes against the federal constitution.

Wan Ahmad stressed that the EC had successfully conducted the 13th general election last month.

"The EC has done nothing wrong from a legal perspective and will not bow to demands to step down. Instead, the 13th general election had achieved its objective to allow the people to elect their representatives at both the state and federal levels.

"All their demands - such as asking the EC to resign, warning that redelineation should not be made before the forming of a new EC, and to urge for by-elections to be held in areas where election petitions have been filed - are against the federal constitution," he was quoted as saying in the Malay daily.

Reminder to EC duo 'timely and pertinent'
