Kedah Barisan Nasional (BN) chairperson Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said today that he is prepared to step down from the post to ensure the state BN remains victorious in the 14th general election (GE14).

He said he also hoped that Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir would take over the post, and that he was prepared to help Mukhriz to ensure BN continued to rule in Kedah.

"Normally, the menteri besar will hold the chairpersonship post to ensure smooth leadership.

"I will endeavour to help the new chairman to defend Kedah in GE14," he told reporters after attending a thanksgiving function organised by Alor Star BN today.

He said, nevertheless, all decisions on the new chairperson's post would be announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
