AG refutes Khir Toyo's 'scapegoat' statement

Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail said the charge against Dr Mohd Khir Toyo is based on solid evidence, not on political factors or to make the former Selangor menteri besar a scapegoat.
In a rare statement yesterday in reference to Khir's posting in his blog post on the May 30 Court of Appeal's upholding of his conviction and 12 months' jail term for graft, Gani said Khir should be cautious in making an inference, particularly one that was without basis.
"Furthermore, the case was heard and decided based on the principles of law and Malaysia's criminal justice system," he said.
Gani pointed out that Khir also had a team of high-profile lawyers to defend him and the appeal was heard by three senior judges.
Khir was found guilty by the High Court of knowingly purchasing two lots of land and a bungalow in Section 7, Shah Alam, at a much lower price than its original value in 2007.
No political interference
Gani stressed there was no political interference in his decision to prosecute and the evidence was based on investigations conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
"I also want to stress that there had never been any political meddling by the prime minister and there will never be any political interference in matters involving the Attorney-General's Chambers," he said.
Gani said Khir should appropriately prepare his case for appeal at the Federal Court, rather than point fingers at anybody.
