Yesterday was likely one of the most heart-wrenching moments ever for retired KTM staff Halim Hamid, age 52, to speak to his son Adam Adli, who was dressed in prison clothes and who had been separated by a sheet of glass.

adam adli raid 190513Halim spent about 15 minutes with Adam and judging from the former's transcript of the conversation, he was not about to let his emotions show.

Adam (right), 24, is being detained for five days on suspicion of violating Section 124 of the Penal Code - a law designed to prevent actions detrimental to parliamentary democracy - and Section 4 of the Sedition Act.

Below is a translated version of the transcript, originally posted on Halim's Facebook page at about 4am today, which has been edited for clarity and brevity:

Assalamualaikum. Sorry for reporting in late. But others have done so, haven't they?

I had a packed schedule with the lawyers. It took a long time before we met Adam. There were a lot of police procedures (we had to go through).

I'm with Ambiga (Sreenevasan), (lawyers) Fadiah Nadwa Fikri and Murni (Hidayah). But only Fadiah and I could meet Adam.

When I saw him, (we were) separated by a piece of glass. I had to speak into a small hole while standing.

Halim: Abang... [While withholding emotions and smiling]

Adam: Ayah. Apa khabar? (Father. How are you?). How are my comrades outside? Are they okay? Are they safe? Is Mama, Amin, Amar and my friends from Bangsar okay?

Halim: I'm good. They are okay. Mama sends her regards. Your brothers are okay. Your friends are in good spirits. They send their regards. Are you okay? Mandeep helped me arrange for lawyers. Khalid is holding a pesta (festival) outside the lock-up every night.

[Both break into laughter]

Adam: [Lowering his head] Okay. Tell them I apologise for troubling them.

Halim: Okay. God willing, it is okay. Be strong sayang, you are strong. You are my son, I believe you are strong.

Adam: Okay. Tell my friends to keep the struggle going. This is a start. Be strong. [Forms a fist]

[Halim jokes with his son and after about five minutes into the conversation, he asks Fadiah to take over and speak about legal matters. Halim shows Adam photographs of the supporters gathered outside the lock up. Adam looks happy and gives a thumbs up.]

Adam tells his activist friends to 'enjoy'

Halim: [After being told he has five minutes left] What do you want to tell the people outside? Your friends?

Adam: Tell them I'll be out in two days. We will continue with our struggle.

Halim: Okay. What about your activist friends? What do you want to tell them?

Adam: Tell them to enjoy.

Halim: "Enjoy"?

Adam: Yes. Enjoy. Just say it.

Halim: Okay. I'll tell them.

Adam: Send mama my regards. Tell her I'm okay.

[Halim allows Fadiah to speak to Adam again and passes some food and drinks to a police personnel, who agreed to pass it to Adam. The father and son give each other the thumbs up.]
