Student activist Adam Adli has been arrested in Bangsar today and will be investigated under section 4 of the Sedition Act.

"Was arrested in Bangsar Utama, currently being brought to Jinjang Police Station," Adam wrote on his Twitter earlier today.

Adam, 24, was arrested by ten plainclothes officers at 3.15 pm in front of Malaysiakini's office, and is currently in the Jinjang police station lock-up awaiting questioning.

The suspended Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student is believed to be arrested over the remarks he made during a post-election forum organised by Suara Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) on May 13.

During the forum, Adam had joined several other anti-government NGOs in calling for a massive street rally to express unhappiness over the electoral process in the country during the May 5 election.

In his short speech, Adam mentioned in passing that he would not mind being charged for sedition for his comments on the night.

Adam is expected to be remanded for at least three days following his detention.

Not new to trouble

The 23-year-old Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student was previously investigated for removing a flag bearing the image of Prime Minister Najib Razak outside the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur two years ago.

If found guilty under the act, Adam could be jailed for up to three years, fined not more than RM 5,000, or both.

Under the act, he is being investigated for making preparation for an act that is alleged to have seditious tendencies.

azlanAccording to Bernama, Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Commissioner Mohmad Salleh confirmed the arrest.

"The subject is being detained at the Jinjang Police Station lock-up regarding an investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948," he said in a short messaging service (SMS).

In January last year, Adam Adli was suspended from studies for three semesters beginning early in semester two 2011/12 until the end of semester two 2012/13 for bringing down the flag that had Najib's potrait.

Adam, when suspended from studies, was in the fifth semester and was taking the teaching of English as a second language when he created controversy at the grounds of the Putra World Trade centre (PWTC) on Dec 17, 2011 by bringing down the flag during a demonstration.
