Thousands of women are expected to benefit from the Penang government's new policy of offering free mammograms and health scans starting next year.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the policy is being introduced because more importance should be placed on women's health as they play a very important role, especially in caring for the family.

The family - if well cared for - is the backbone of the country for generations to come, he said.

"We are working with public and private sectors and the civil society to provide this benefit to women in all five districts in Penang," Lim told a press conference in Komtar today.

"We plan to do it soon, as women's health cannot wait. It is definitely very important, and the state wants to help in setting up the necessary procedures," he stressed.

Lim said the service will be introduced under the charge of state executive councillor Chong Eng.

He added that he was very impressed with the story of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie who said in yesterday's New York Times that she had undergone a double mastectomy to save herself from the possibility of getting cancer.

"I know it is not usual for men to talk about these issues, but I like to state how concerned we are about women's health," he noted.

A chance to play a bigger role in society

The announcement comes a day after Lim introduced a new RM100 annual award for working women under the age of 60 and the Women's Brigade where they would be given a chance to play a bigger role in society.

At the same press conference, Lim gave recognition to 10-year-old Delwin Cheah Wien Loong, who in April, was certified by the Malaysia Book of Records as the "Youngest Artist to Hold a Visual Art Exhibition".

Delwin - who is diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorder - presented Lim with one of his beautifully drawn artworks.

Lim said Delwin should be acknowledge for his talent and the fact that he is a "Penang boy".

Delwin was accompanied by his parents Erina and Lawrence, and currently studies at SK St Xavier Branch School, Penang.

Meanwhile, annually organised George Town Festival director Joe Sidek announced that the month-long art, music and cultural event will be held from June 7 to July 7.

"This year's programmes are led by the keywords - community, interaction and spaces. We have also improved on public accessibility and exciting events," he added.
