Utusan blames Chinese for 'violent' Blackout rallies

Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia and Umno-linked daily Berita Harian have taken aim at the “black rallies” organised by Pakatan Rakyat to protest alleged fraud in the recently concluded general election, painting them as Chinese-dominated and violent.

Utusan Malaysia’s front page read: ‘Young Chinese monopolises illegal rallies’ followed by several photographs of Chinese participants in such protests on page 6 under the title ‘DAP continues to trigger provocation’.
It claimed that “tens of thousands of young Chinese” had flooded the first rally in Kelana Jaya last Wednesday and “about 70 percent of the crowd was Chinese” during the second rally in Batu Kawan last Saturday.
“These Chinese youths are expected to continue giving undivided support to the series of rallies that will be held nationwide,” its report read.
Meanwhile, Berita Harian said the series of black rallies, the third of which drew about 30,000 in Ipoh yesterday, was a continuation of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s penchant for street demonstrations.
In its page 12 report, it splashed several photographs of the Bersih 3.0 protest last year of smashed police cars, overturned police motorcycles and a protester lifting police barricades with the title ‘Anwar mastermind of illegal rallies’.
“Who does not know Anwar Ibrahim, from when he held the highest position in government until his fall from grace when arrested and imprisoned, he continues to be the mastermind of street demonstrations in this country,” it said.
It continued to chronicle a history of protests supposedly masterminded by Anwar, from the Baling demonstration to protest against alleged starvation in 1974, the reformasi movement of 1998 and to the present day.
“The rakyat is fed with all kinds of sedition and slander through social media to give a negative picture about the general election and urged to go to the streets to voice out,” the report read.
