Jihad is about gaining knowledge
I must confess that I do not understand Ariff Yusoff's beef about Tai Lo Chin's comment on Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat's 'free speech against Islam' diatribe.
Any interested person can check any basic book on Islam or Islamic law or the innumerable Muslim websites to know that jihad akbar or the greatest jihad is indeed not the call to arms. The acquisition of knowledge is a jihad .
It may be too much to say that this is Dr Farish A Noor's interpretation! This view is in fact attributed to the Prophet of Islam and Farish is reminding us of this view of jihad .
Knowledge is readily available to those who are willing to search for it. It is sheer laziness and apathy to say that 'experts' are the only type of people capable of discussing these things. Are we blind receivers of information?
If we are able to cultivate in ourselves the ability of discernment, critique and analysis of information told to us by the ulama (Islamic scholar), the lawyer or the politician and then engage intelligently, this is the rahmah (good) of the greater jihad .
