Former Kedah menteri besar Azizan Abdul Razak, who has been admitted to the Penang Hospital, is reportedly in 'critical condition'.

PAS organ Harakahdaily said Azizan is being treated at the coronary care unit (CCU).

NONEThe report quoted Azizan's former press secretary Mohd Helmi Khalid as providing the information in a text-message at 10.44am.

Mohd Helmi said Azizan's condition had 'worsened about 5.30am'.

A large crowd of journalists and visitors has gathered outside the CCU, and Penang governor Abdul Rahman Abbas is said to be on his way to the hospital.

Malaysiakini has learnt that Azizan, 73, is in a coma.

Bernama reported that he was transferred to the hospital last night from the Kedah Medical Centre, where he had been receiving treatment since yesterday morning.

In Sunday's general election, Azizan retained the Sungai Limau state seat in Kedah for PAS, with a majority of 2,774 votes.

He defeated his cousin and BN candidate Fazillah Mohd Ali, as well as two independents in the four-cornered fight.

However, PAS lost the state administration to the BN, which won 21 of the 36 state seats.

Yang diPertuan Agong calls on Azizan

According to state PAS commissioner Salleh Man, who just visited Azizan in the ward, the former MB is "in a stable condition".

"He is on oxygen. His hands and legs can move. He should be okay."

Earlier, Salleh chided journalists on news reports about Azizan's condition, saying "you all should check first before reporting."

He said it was normal for Azizan to visit the Penang Hospital for his health condition.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his wife sent Azizan a bouquet of flowers.

About 4.50pm, the Yang diPertuan Agong arrived to visit Azizan, accompanied by Kedah Menteri Besar Muhkriz Mahathir.

Penang Governor Abdul Rahman Abbas also paid Azizan a visit. All of them spent about 10 minutes with the patient.

Mukhriz told journalists later that Azizan was in a stable condition, adding, "We will continue to monitor his condition."
