'Normal' telecom, Internet services on polling day
Telecommunications and Internet services were normal during the general election yesterday, said the Malaysian Communications and MultimediaCommission (MCMC).
Telecommunications and Internet services were normal during the general election yesterday, said the Malaysian Communications and MultimediaCommission (MCMC).
The services were not crippled as claimed in social media circles, it said.
Monitoring throughout the day by MCMC and service providers found that the telecommunications systems was operating as usual.
"Members of the public are advised to not easily believe whatever they read on social media or rumours that are spread through SMS-es,"said MCMC chairperson Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi.
MCMC detected only a small number of websites were hacked or experienced mild DDOS attacks.
Sharil said that if the public had experienced intermittent disruption to their Internet service, it may have been due to the overwhelming numbers of visitors to the websites to obtain the latest updates on GE13.
MCMC advised website owners to boost their website security levels and said it hopes this vigilance will continue.
