Independent candidates failed to win any parliamentary or state seat in the 13th general election (GE13), a far cry from the last general election when they won one state seat in Kedah and another in Pahang.

Of 270 Independent candidates in the running, 79 vied for parliamentary seats and 191 for state seats, compared with 108 in the 2008 general election.

NONEIn the tussle for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat, former Wanita Umno vice-chief Kamilia Ibrahim (left), who stood as an independent, suffered a humiliating defeat, securing only 447 votes and lost her deposit.

She lost the contest in a three-cornered fight to Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar, who garnered 14,218 votes.

Another contender, Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah (PAS) polled 13,136 votes.

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, who stood as a pro-Umno Independent, lost the Pasir Mas parliamentary seat that he took in 2008 to Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz of PAS by a 8,047-vote majority.

Oldest candidate too fares badly

In the tussle for the Tanjong Karang parliamentary seat, dangdut singer Herman Tino, who stood as an Independent, lost badly when he polled only 340 votes and forfeited his deposit.

The three-cornered fight was clinched by Umno's Noh Omar, who received 20,548 votes. Another contender, Mohamad Rashdi Deraman of PAS, secured 16,154 votes.

The oldest candidate, Maimun Yusof or Tok Mun, lost badly in her second attempt in the contest for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat. She bagged only 94 votes and lost her deposit.

The seat was won by Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah of PAS, who also beat Mohd Zubir Embong of the BN.

A total of 266 Independent candidates lost their deposit as they failed to secure one-eight of the votes cast.
