Well it was interesting to hear Lee Ri Qiang comment in his letter Tudung ban not mistreatment of minority (Feb 5) on the rules and practices of Islam, although it was skewed to his interest.

But I would like to ask him what is the puberty age for girls? Does he presume that to be at 18 or 21 years old?

In reality and as defined by Islam, puberty begins with the onset of menses. What age will that be? Ten, 11or 12? What then would be the decision of the Singapore government? Subject the Muslim girls to medical tests to confirm that they have indeed reached puberty and then announce the fact?

It is traumatic as it is for some girls when their menstruation starts. It would certainly add to their ordeal if they have to publicise it as well. That is why some parents opt to make their little girls wear the tudung when young so that they would be comfortable with wearing it once its mandatory for them to do so.
