Sarawak DAP candidate for Bandar Kuching Chong Chieng Jen has challenged the seven Sarawak United People's Party election candidates to declare their stand on corruption and to disassociate themselves from the corrupt BN regime.

The seven candidates are Richard Riot (Serian), Yong Khoon Seng (Stampin), Tan Kai (Bandar Kuching), Ding Kuong Hiing (Sarikei), Vincent Lau (Sibu), Tiong Thai King (Lanang) and Sebastian Ting (Miri).

NONE"I want them to make clear their stand on corruption and abuse of power in the Barisan Nasional, in line with their election slogan of a ‘clean and just' government," Chong (right) said at a media conference today.

"This is important so that the general public know their true stand," he said.

Chong, who is Sarawak DAP secretary, was commenting on SUPP's Stampin candidate Yong's statement that he was fed-up with the opposition continuing to talk about corruption in the BN.

"The opposition keeps on talking about corruption. I am also against corruption. Actually I am very poor and I live in a 40-year-old house and drive a 30-year-old car," Yong said, pointing out that the opposition could not attack him on corruption.

"They cannot find proof of corruption. I really do not get involved in it," he added.


Chong responded: "I am not accusing anyone of them of being corrupt. What I have been saying is that they represent a corrupt regime.

"Whether they are corrupt is not relevant. But if they were to be elected, they would represent a corrupt regime. It is important for them to declare their stand, for the people want to know and will make up their minds as to whether they want a corrupt regime or not."

Answer three questions by tomorrow

Chong, who faces Tan Kai in the May 5 election, said the SUPP candidates must answer the questions he put to them.

"The first issue is the expose by Global Witness that the Sarawak government has alienated 5,000 hectares of land to Ample Agro Sdn Bhd at RM300 to RM400 per acre and this company is trying to sell it at RM5,000 per acre.

"After the expose, Chief Minister (Abdul Taib Mahmud) refused to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency.

"My question is: What is the stand of the SUPP candidates' on this and what is their party's stand?"

He continued: "My question number two is on the 269 acres of land valued at RM400 million. The state government alienated the land to a company owned by Taib's son at a price of RM80 million.

"I ask the SUPP candidates: what is your stand on this? And since they represent SUPP, what is SUPP's stand on this?"

Chong's third question was on 42 plots of land with a market price of RM1 billion that had been alienated to a crony company known as Titanium Management Company.

"But these parcels of land were alienated to the company that paid 20% of the market value. For this, I ask what the stand of the SUPP candidates is.

"I urge them to show their sincerity, based on their ‘clean and just' slogan. The common people of Sarawak want to know their stand and their party's stand," Chong said, adding that he was giving them one day to answer the three questions.
