Selangor state assemblypersons have been reminded that they are not allowed to spend more than 50 percent of the state government funds for their respective constituencies.

In a press release today, caretaker Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that the state government had arrived at this decision last month.

"This is to ensure there are sufficient allocations after the general election for the new government to perform its duties effectively so that the people's welfare won't be affected," he said.

NONEKhalid (left) added that his administration had sought to bring about reforms, and he was proud that none of his cabinet members, Pakatan Rakyat state assemblypersons or senior government officials had been charged with graft.

"The exco members and I hope that voters in Selangor will be able to make a proper assessment of our achievements over the past five years.

"Not only did we ensure that Selangor is still the most developed state with the highest amount of investments, but we also looked after the people's welfare.

On with 'reformasi' administration?

"I urge all voters, particularly those in Selangor, to provide us with a fresh mandate to continue with our reformasi administration," he said.

Prior to Khalid's administration, each state assemblyperson would be allocated RM500,000 annually to be used for donations, disaster reliefs, small infrastructure projects, festive celebrations, and other matters.

After the 2008 general election, most Pakatan state assemblypersons found that their predecessors had spent nearly all the money - often dubiously - between the months of January and February. That year, Parliament had been dissolved on Feb 18.

Khalid later told the state assembly that in those two months, BN state assemblypersons had blew RM27 million in those two months alone, forcing his administration to cough up more funds for the current crop of state assemblypersons.

Meanwhile, Khalid said that his government will function as a proper caretaker government and will not formulate new policies, nor spend any state funds on new projects.
