New Internet TV provider KiniTV has received strong response from viewers in its first month, hitting more than 3.3 million views in March.

KiniTV is a rebrand of Malayiakini’s TV site Malaysiakini.tv. Launched on March 17, KiniTV recorded 92,936 unique visitors and more than 255,736 page views as of March 31, 2013.

KiniTV reached more than 7.2 million viewers in the first three months of 2013, making it one of the most popular Internet television stations in the country.

As YouTube’s direct partner, its YouTube channel has 64,396 subscribers, 6,665 videos and more than 61 million views.

KiniTV and its predecessor Malaysiakini.tv’s achievements were highlighted at the Google conference in Singapore recently.

“The viewers are thirsty for independent television news reports that provide in-depth discussion and multiple viewpoints, which are sorely lacking in the mainstream media.

“The fast-growing figures are a testimony that KiniTV has been able to fill the vacuum and that we are on the right track,” KiniTV director Premesh Chandran said.

300 videos within three months

Yong also paid tribute to KiniTV’s 13 editorial team members who have been working day and night to produce 235 English and Chinese news items, 14 interviews and special issues, as well as 41 videos on the Lahad Datu insurgency crisis within the short period.

NONESpecial issues which attracted interest and sparked long discussions included ‘BN cyber trooper,’ ‘Mama Bersih’ and ‘Pacaba’ (Polling, Counting, and Barong agents).

“We will be focusing on conducting national dialogues and discussions on critical subjects leading to the general election, with interviews and forums comprising politicians from the opposite spectrum as well as independent analysis.”

As for the general election campaign period, KiniTV will be hitting the ground and campaign trails as well as focusing on “hot seats”.

“We are positioning ourselves as the No 1 election TV station that will capture the sentiments of the constituents and reflect the people's thoughts amidst the noisy background of the campaigns,” Yong said.
